City Run - Somethin' Else
TEXAS MUSIC TIMES
10 City Run’s newest CD,
Somethin' Else, was the result
of a contest of Texas bands promoted by
the “Texas Country Reporter” television
show. The winner of the competition in
2005 was Hans Frank and the band known
as 10 City Run. 'Somethin' Else',
recorded at the superb facilities of
Keith Harter studios in San Antonio,
Texas, and produced by John Beland is a
great alt-country record. The twelve
tracks on the CD include a mix of songs
written by Hans Frank and others,
including the Warren Zevon classic
“Carmelita" and Tommy Duncan’s “Stay all
Night.” “Stay all Night” grooves in a
Pulp Fiction sort of way
that flashes visions of Uma Thurman and
John Travolta in a nouveau riche Los
Angeles bar. The track “City of Angles”
with the hook “Just a dumb ol’ country
boy” earned wide airplay in Texas and
other markets, including XM’s
alt-country channel. Another notable
track is Doug Sahm’s “Juan Mendoza.” The
tune is a contrast of global issues
confronted with the problems of everyday
life presented in a fun way. In all
Somethin' Else is a crafty
record with excellent production. It is
not a homogenized record of average
songwriting to sell lots of copies. Any
country or alt-country fan will be very
pleased with Somethin' Else.
Give it a listen. (Review by Keith
Howerton)

THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE IS FROM
THE SWEDISH MUSIC MAGAZINE "LIRA", Dec
2009.
"PG & Frank
Chasing The Wind
Norwegian Americana.
PG & Frank means P G Stølen
and Frank R B Fjellvang. They're
from southern Norway, but
their
hearts can be found in the
country-rock of the American West
Coast. That's where Fjellvang's fine
songwriting with an
unerring instinct for
melodies, the fluent part singing,
and the elegant, smooth
accompaniment - where John Beland's
smashing guitar heavily
breaks through, an important
contrast - belong. Beland has a
background full of
well-known names, but
mostly he's associated with Flying
Burritos. That also makes
an approximation of the music's
character, even though its
uniqueness first of all derives from
the meeting between the American
West Coast and the Norwegian south.
Fjellvang's lyrics root the music in
the Norwegian settings. Also the
saxophone, nicely played by Larry
Klima, the West Coast veteran, turns
into a digression clearly moving
beyond the music's nature, which was
so distinctly marked from the start.
It's Americana, but of the Norwegian
kind.

JOHN
LAYS DOWN SOME HOT GUITAR ON PG &
FRANK CD !
(Oct
7th 2008 Kristiansand, Norway)
John started
production on the new PG & Frank CD
" Chasing The Wind" on Tuesday.
Sessions have been fabulous,
featuring some great playing between JB and top session ace drummer Bruce
Rasmussen.
Recording has been
going on at Number1 Studios in Kristiansand, with Per Kjetil Farstad
at the board engineering.
The remainder of the
CD will be recorded in Texas at
John's studio Tyler Trax 5, and
mastered at Frontier Studios, in

Says JB, " Well, this
has been a total treat! I wish all
projects could be like this, with
not only total pro's all around me,
but some of the nicest people I have
ever had the pleasure to have worked
alongside of. The music is shaping
up better than we could have hoped
for, and I'm expecting this CD to
really turn some heads, not only
here in Norway, but worldwide. It's
going to be THAT good!"

Says John;
'"As
much as I have toured the world as a performer,
recording has always been at the fore front of my
life. Ever since my first session when I was 15
years old, I have felt most at home in the confines
of microphones, baffles and control boards. I
treat the recording process with extreme seriousness
while at the same time making the process fun and
memorable for any artist I produce. I strive
for one thing, and that is to use the best of my
ability and experience to record the best project I
can with the goal of achieving commercial success
for my acts.
I've been blessed to have worked with some of the
greatest talent in
pop / country music, as well as
the cream of the crop studio players,
engineers and
producers. All of that experience helped make me the
producer / player I am today.
The business of music will always be changing, but
the process of recording music will remain a
constant. As long as it does, I'm happy
to continue
working on great songs, alongside great artists.
Recording
is a like a sip from the fountain of
youth....It never gets old for me." |
